Sir — This refers to the editorial, “People suffer, he laughs” (April 9). Mr Ajit Pawar’s comments reflect an abysmal lack of grace and sensitivity. When parched, debt-ridden farmers protest, Mr Pawar chooses to jeer at them rather than address their problems and make efforts to ameliorate their sufferings. Mr Pawar seems to have outdone the famous French queen who advised her hungry masses to eat cake if they were unable to get bread.
It is a fact that the sugar barons of Maharashtra have gobbled away the common man’s precious natural resource for their lucrative produce, and worse, decreed that sugar be decontrolled to boost profits. Indeed, Mr Pawar’s dark sense of humour is not just appalling but completely uncalled for and insensitive. One is left wondering whether he truly deserves the chair he is firmly ensconced in today.
