Sir — The Bangalore rape incident is a heinous crime. A six-year old student was raped in the school during schools hours. How can parents send their wards to schools that are not safeIJ The law in its present form, although considerably strengthened since the terrible incident in Delhi in end-2012, does not seem to hold terror. This is partly because the conviction rate in rape cases is low and partly because the culprits believe that they can escape.
Meanwhile, irresponsible comments by politicians like Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav that rapes cannot be contained since Uttar Pradesh is a populous State carry no conviction. If his son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav cannot contain terror against women, he should quit.
