Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Still brazening it out” (January 4). Our hibernating Prime Minister seemed evasive in his approach and terse in his replies which were devoid of content.
He dodged uncomfortable questions. In his tenure of nearly 10 years, Mr Manmohan Singh hasn’t painted a reputable figure and has spawned one disaster after another, with mammoth scams sapping the UPA’s image. The political glitter during Friday’s Press conference was Mr Singh’s verbal salvo against Mr Narendra Modi. He claimed that it would be disastrous for the country if the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate eventually got the top job. But he remained silent on issues of corruption such as that of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.
Mr Singh’s briefing was to announce his retirement. He did not fail to pay his heartfelt patronage to the Nehru-Gandhi clan, crediting his success to the support he received from Ms Sonia Gandhi. The general view is that the UPA is more of a gloom than a boom, and it stuns me that Mr Singh still lives in a cloud-cuckoo-land in believing that the Congress-led coalition will return to power.
