This refers to the report, “TMC MP Dola does a Gaikwad in flight” (April 9). It is not only a matter of shame but also of concern that even after 69 years of independence, India has not developed. Such arrogant behaviour, on the part of our VIPs, is indicative of our slavish mentality that has been ingrained in us due to long periods of slavery and subjugation. More worrisome is the fact that instead of ending such a regressive attitude, we are continuing to add more Vs to the already crowd of Vs in VIPs and VVIPs.
little introspection into our past will reveal that our leaders, faltered at the time of independence, took a wrong cue from the British in this matter. They, thus, lost the opportunity of ending this slavish mentality. Instead, we continued with the British style in India — a style which they had copied from the Mughals. little did we realise that British did not follow such a style in their own country. It is hoped that the present Government will strive to end this culture and pave the way for India migrating into the league of developed nations.
