Sir — Polls focus on key ‘bread and butter’ issues. In Delhi, this time it was Aam Aadmi Party’s promise of reducing electricity bills and ensuring free supply of a minimum amount of potable water that were the key electoral points. But the former is predicated on a possible fiscal misadventure and the latter problem of water scarcity is the result of a natural curse for which AAP seemingly has no solution. Either way, the AAP’s plans for Delhi threaten to make the Government go bankrupt.
The great city of Detroit that once had the highest per capita income in the US went bankrupt on fiscal profligacy. If civic services and utilities are to be subsidised by state largesse as a principle of popular governance, Delhi too will go the Detroit way.
But since it is the national capital, the Central will probably always bridge the fiscal gap. This will make Delhi an elitist city surviving at the cost of the nation
