In defeat, the Congress can plot its revival

This refers to the report, “Congress readies to be dignified in drubbing” (May 15). The preoccupation of top Congress leaders in assiduously erecting a Great Wall of India around party vice president Rahul Gandhi and insulating him from any fallout of the adverse election result, is a reflection of the principal malaise with which the party is afflicted. The dismal results to come will be a god-sent opportunity for the Congress to halt, ponder and act effectively as an Opposition, while restructuring and re-thinking its hitherto solely anti-Modi, anti-BJP approach.

The party must also reconsider the desirability of continuing with the politics of dynasty since the family's biggest leader after the party's president has failed to lead his party to success — and has indeed led to its near decimation. The assumed shackles of coalition dharma, thrown as a convenient cloak over misdeeds, being no longer a constraint, the Congress can project a positive face and perhaps come back some day.
