In Assam, the BJP must focus on governance

This refers to the editorial, “BJP's new footprints” (May 20). In Assam, the BJP has shown that even non-populist administrative measures can find acceptance with the people. Secular-minded people have voted for the saffron party, ignoring its alleged ‘communal’ tag. On the other hand, the Congress’s failure to project a suitable chief ministerial candidate harmed its prospects. Clearly, the people of Assam were frustrated with the functioning of the Congress Government. Moreover, the results have only proved that the grand old party is on a steady decline in the country’s political arena.

The new BJP-led Government in Assam must take concrete steps for the overall development of the State and other parts of the North-East to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the people who have voted for the party. It must set up a model administration in the State by doing away with the corrupt governance of its predecessors.
