The Supreme Court has rightly taken cognisance of controversial persons who are related to matters being probed by the country's premier investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, visiting the official residence of the CBI Director, as per the visitors' diary maintained at his residence. The CBI chief has admitted that he had met some such people but claimed he had bestowed no favours. His argument that anyone can visit him or his family members is unacceptable. Persons in sensitive posts must be careful about meeting persons who are directly or indirectly associated with cases probed by their agencies. Such visits, if any, should be recorded in the relevant case files.
The big worry after this episode has hit media headlines is the probability of such controversial visits not being recorded in the future and even not being taken cognisance by the apex court. The aspect of copy of visitors' diary reaching the media is also a matter of great significance.
