Impactful speech

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Call to national service” (August 16). Prime Minister Narendra Modi, unlike his predecessors, delivered a vociferous speech that was followed by an ear-deafening applause. His address touched the heart of every Indian.

Mr Modi spoke of development, good governance, women’s safety, bureaucratic inertia, improvement of work culture, cooperation, modernisation and use of technology to bridge the rural-urban divide. He acknowledged the contribution of the farmer who feeds the nation and the soldier who protects the country. He also spoke of the scientists, teachers and social workers who build national character.

Mr Modi also gave a new definition to the post of Prime Minister. His speech was content-based and didn’t venture into acrimonious political avenues.

Importantly, the Prime Minister spoke about the roles and responsibilities of all Indians, irrespective of creed, caste or sect. He asked the citizens to change their insouciant and blasé attitude. Instead of asking, “Why should I bother and how does this affect meIJ” he asked people to answer the question, “How can I contribute to the nation’s welfareIJ” His speech was perfectly calibrated to make the maximum impact on the masses.
