Immunity problem

Published on:

This refers to the article, “Drawing the lines of diplomatic immunity” (September 17) by Ashok Jahnavi Prasad. The Saudi diplomat is alleged to have done what he would do best in his own country. Naturally, when a Delhi police officer, without going into the nitty-gritty of the protocol rules, reached the flat of the Saudi diplomat, the latter did not present himself.

On the contrary, he, through his embassy, lodged a complaint that his privilege of diplomatic immunity has been violated by the visit of the Delhi police officer. Devyani Khobragade, a consular staff of the Indian embassy, had been arrested in 2013, for an alleged mis-statement in the visa application of one Sangeeta Richard, who was appointed as a maid in her house. But then, Ms Khobragare was a consular staff and not a staff of the Indian embassy.

It is doubtful, how far the Indian administration can move against the Saudi diplomat by disregarding diplomatic protocol. Indian authorities cannot not do anything as the Saudi diplomat has already left the country.
