Sir — This refers to the report, “Parl adjourned sine die: Opp doesn’t allow lS, RS to transact business” (April 7). It is unfortunate that disrupting the Parliament on one or the other pretext has become a routine affair for the Opposition. At times, an entire session has been washed out without transacting any legislative business. Parliament is the supreme Constitutional institution of our democracy and a dysfunctional Parliament is a matter of grave concern.
One hundred and twenty seven hours of the lok Sabha, 120 hours of the Rajya Sabha and more than `190 crore of taxpayer’s money were wasted in the completely washed out Budget session of the Parliament which ended on April 6. Crucial issues of public interest and important pending legislation could not be debated due to disruptions. Even the Budget was passed without any discussion.
Those stalling the Parliament achieved nothing except losing the opportunity for debate on their issues. Instances of parliamentarians making the Parliament dysfunctional are unheard of in matured democracies. We are the largest democracy in the world but after 68 years of existence, our parliamentarians are too far from being mature.
