Hypocritical people

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Politicising hate crime” (February 27). No condemnation is enough for Hyderabad engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla who was killed in the US. The culprit should be accorded highest punishment possible. But along with severe condemnation and demand for punishment for Adam Purinton, I would like to pose a few questions:

Why don’t our ‘conscientious’ leaders, citizens and the media of this country protest so zealously when Indians of ‘non-glamorous professions’ like housemaid or driver get fatally abused in the Gulf countriesIJ

How many Indians have cared to condemn violent racism in their own country, when a Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza became a victim of hate crime in Jalandhar and breathed his last on June 2014, after remaining in comaIJ We have selective amnesia.

What about the racist attacks and killing of our fellow north-eastern brothers and sistersIJ Thanks to our hypocritical stand, it can be said that India ‘wakes up’ from slumber and protests against hate crimes only when an Indian of glamorous professional vintage falls victim to racism in foreign land.
