Former Sri lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was voted out by the people barely six months ago, is poised to stage a comeback. For President Maithripala Sirisena, this is a Hobson’s choice: Having fallen out with Mr Rajapaksa before last year’s election, he had to align himself with his former political rivals. Today, he has had to soften his stand on the former President who will now be seeking a parliamentary seat under Mr Sirisena’s coalition banner. Mr Rajapaksa has already launched his parliamentary election campaign at the grassroots level, while President Sirisena’s dithering on Mr Rajapaksa’s nomination has cost him some political support. Sri lanka must beware of unnecessary political turmoil again.
