Sir — This refers to the article, “Mamata’s brazen admission of Muslim appeasement” (September 9) by Anirban Ganguly. The writer’s powerful indictment of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a new face of ‘secular fascism’ takes us back to the pre-partition Bengal when under the then Prime Minister, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy’s rule and the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s ‘direct action’, Hindu Bengalis were stripped off of their dignity. Unfortunately, West Bengal’s present popularly elected Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is presiding over a repeat of that grim tragedy. Thus, who is more responsible for Banerjee’s ‘fascism’IJ The answer is unmistakable: The so-called intelligent, educated and intellectually aware Bengali community.
