Historically intolerant

Sir — This refers to the article, “If the court troubles, let’s then muzzle it” (May 28) by A Surya Prakash. It is no small tragedy — and a cruel irony — that the ‘grand old party’ that was in the vanguard of our freedom struggle, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, currently has a surfeit of petty-minded leaders like Digvijaya Singh who do not hesitate for a moment before deriding key constitutional institutions like the judiciary and the Comptroller and Auditor-General.

The writer has rightly attributed the onset of this rot to the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who displayed a marked contempt for an independent judiciary or any other important institution of our democracy. The ‘caged parrot’ must have had its origin then.
