He's back

Sir — At 92, Mahathir Bin Mohamad is back in the saddle in Malaysia as the world’s oldest elected leader. He had come out of retirement and defeated the Barisan Nasional (BN), which was in power for six decades.

It was not a task a lesser person was equal to; and the respected veteran had to step in to accomplish. The spectacular win Mahathir has scored is a proof that Malaysians still has faith in him and believes that he is capable of playing a messianic role.

It was obvious that the fate of BN, led by former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, was sealed the day he threw his hat into the ring.

The veteran, however, is faced with an uphill task of living up to people’s expectations. People will expect him to be his former self and act with verve and vitality. Only time will tell whether his new innings is as good as the previous one.
