Sir — This refers to the article, “The other terror attack on India” (January 7) by Mayuri Mukherjee. The article righltly highlights the volatile situation in Afghanistan. The Afghan problem is a constant headache for the US, Pakistan and India ever since 2001, when the US invaded Afghanistan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Since then, there has been a constant strife, without a permanent solution in sight. US President Barack Obama’s decision to keep 5,500 troops in Afghanistan till 2017 has worsened the situation.
In the wake of two warring factions of the Talibans and the emergence of the Islamic State, there is an urgent need to bring Afghanistan back on the route of development, since things there are in a war-like situation.
