Sir — The US has long been confronted with police insensitivity in handling issues relating to the black community. But the country’s politicians abjure vitriol in speeches. The crass utterances, increasingly heard of late from Indian politicians, can only be dismissed as waywardness at our peril. Should our law enforcers take this as given, we may find it hard to rein in the offenders. Afflicted already with the likes of the Khaps, the political class of whatever dispensation must be careful to a fault. The progress of a nation is more than mere GDP growth. It can endure only when there is all-round equity.
