Gujjars quota breaches Supreme Court's order

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Gujjars and the job quota” (May 30). The assurance given by the Rajasthan Government of a Bill that will offer reservation of five per cent to the Gujjar community in Government employment exceeds the ceiling limit of 50 per cent, imposed by the Supreme Court anywhere in India. This is a clear breach of the apex court directive, and Rajasthan is not the only State to be on the wrong side of the law. Tamil Nadu has 67 per cent reservation

If the Governments can ignore the directives issued by the highest court of the land, it must be construed that it is the executive, be it at the State level or at the Union level, that will have the last laugh. It seems like only verdicts that are convenient to the Government are obeyed or implemented. It is pathetic that even the Supreme Court is reduced to be a mute spectator, even when its orders are being blatantly violated.
