Sir — This refers to the article, “A village that harnessed the sun” (August 1) by Avik Roy. We have major power problems in metropolitan cities even after 67 year of independence. It is tragic that subsequent Governments have failed to solve the problem. Hence, the initiative taken by residents of Dharnai, a small village in Bihar, is admirable.
The Government should encourage solar power in all the parts of country, especially in desert regions where a large quantity of sunlight is available throughout the year.Our new Prime Minister is a strong votary of alternative means of energy, such as solar power. He had even established a solar park in Gujarat when he was the State’s Chief Minister. We hope that he will be able to replicate that success across the country.
Dharnai is also a good example of collective community action. If we decide to change the fate of our village, then it can be done despite a negligent state administration. The cooperation of residents can convert even the impossible into the possible.
