Government inaction

Published on:

Sir — It is surprising and shocking that the Union Government is not fulfilling its obligations with regard to the issue of the Director of Central Bureau of Investigation facing a number of allegations. The matter has reached the Supreme Court. The Government should initiate its own proceedings in the matter without waiting for a court verdict.

There is a public perception that politicians cutting across party lines observe a curious silence if officers in the country’s premium investigating agencies like the CBI or the Intelligence Bureau are allegedly involved in some irregularity.

Is it because these agencies and their bosses have in their possession disturbing and incriminating reports about both those in power and in the oppositionIJ

There are too many allegations about CBI Director Ranjit Sinha misusing his official residence. Many high-ranking persons misuse their privileges by installing expensive items at their official residences at the cost of the public authorities concerned, whenever the spending limit of the Central Public Works Department is exhausted.

Also, institutions like the CBI are exempt from the Right to Information Act. There are sufficient provisions of information being exempted from disclosure under 10 sub-sections of Section 8(1) of the RTI Act. There is no need for Section 24 in the Act.
