Government getting a hang of the Hurriyat

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Exposing the Hurriyat” (July 26). The Government's crackdown on separatist leaders in the valley is a welcome reminder to the inimical forces at play, along with the fact that the Kashmir issue is not the only focal point of India's strategic and diplomatic policies. It is true that successive Governments in New Delhi have employed their economic resources primarily in pursuing a militaristic policy in Kashmir; but what has stopped the leaders of the Hurriyat from joining the political mainstream and running the administrationIJ While they speak of ‘supporting' dialogue and reconciliation to resolve the ‘unfinished agenda of partition', one wonders why the Hurriyat leaders find themselves at a loss for words in condemning terrorism in Kashmir and across the border.

Be it the Kargil war, the 26/11 terror attack, the blatant ceasefire violations and the beheading of Indian soldiers, the outrageous demands for liberation of terrorists, waving of Pakistan's national flag in Kashmir, anti-India sloganeering or the dastardly attacks in the valley, the Hurriyat has always taken an anti-national stand, thus derailing the confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan. It is time the State's political leadership took appropriate action to silence all malicious forces which intend to sabotage the India-Pakistan peace process.
