Governance has taken a back seat in Tamil Nadu

This refers to the editorial, “The game of thrones is back” (September 14).  The removal of VK Sasikala as the chief of AIADMK and the invalidation of the appointment of TT V Dinakaran as deputy general secretary, the abolition of the post of general secretary, the nullification of decisions taken by Sasikala and Dinakaran, the creation of the posts of party coordinator and co-coordinator and the ratification of appointments of OPS and EPS to these posts were the key decisions taken by the general council of the AIADMK. But the validity of the meeting held is to be pronounced by the Madras High Court. By naming J.Jayalalithaa the “eternal” general secretary, the gathering made its undying love for the departed leader known. But with 21 MlAs still swearing loyalty to Dinakaran, his is not a threat that the Government can take lightly. A big question mark hangs over the longevity of the Government.

There is a perception that the AIADMK leaders and Ministers cling together and do BJP’s bidding for fear of being brought under the scanner of the central agencies on charges of corruption is also yet to be said. It is here worth noting that little ideology divides the AIADMK factions and internecine feuds are not based on differences over policies or issues affecting the people. It appears that the Dinakaran camp enjoys greater grassroots support among the party cadres and the people. With the Government tottering, governance has taken a back seat.
