Good start

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Polishing the railways” (March 21). Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu appears to be a man with a mission. Mr Prabhu was handpicked for the job by Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of his impeccable credentials. Mr Prabhu faces the daunting task of bringing Indian Railways, derailed by the short-sighted policies of the previous Governments, back on track.

He has struck a right note by presenting a good Budget which was not meant for the gallery. The Budget was a sincere attempt to bring in funds to the cash-strapped organisation. Mr Suresh Prabhu’s ‘Kayakalp’, with Mr Ratan Tata as its helm, is bound to go a long way in ushering a positive image-makeover for the Railways. The success and failure of a Government is more often than not directly linked to the efficiency with which the railways functions.

A common man expects the trains to be punctual, clean, safe and secure. There has been a perceptible change in all these areas since the NDA took over. People’s cooperation to the minister’s endeavour and towards development cannot be over-stressed.
