Sir — This refers to the article, “Veil of history has done harm to Kashmir” (August 12) by Sandhya Jain. It was lord Mountbatten who stopped Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru from visiting Kashmir prior to his own visit. It was he who prevented the Indian Army from dispelling the insurgents from Kashmir because he was afraid that it would involve British personnel.
It was also lord Mountbatten who insisted that India go to the United Nations on the issue of Kashmir. Nehru later regretted the decision to do so.
