Good beginning

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “A boost to cleaner sports” (December 11). It is some solace that at last wisdom has prevailed over the Indian Olympic Association and it has agreed to amend its constitution to keep tainted officials at bay.

It has been almost a year since the International Olympic Committee suspended the IOA after the latter refused to bar corrupt officials from contesting elections. Close on the heels of a Supreme Court ruling barring convicted lawmakers from contesting elections, the IOA has agreed to follow the dictates of the IOC.

Undue interference of the IOA’s officials in the selection of players has led to the country’s dismal performance in sporting events. India won the Olympic gold in hockey on eight occasions — the last time was at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Hopefully, the IOC’s firm stand will cleanse the IOA.
