Give teachers a voice

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the article, “They have much learning to do”  (April 18) by Meeta W Sengupta. The writer has rightly explained that there are teachers who make a difference and those who break the trust reposed in them. But why does she say that “teachers are a confused collective”IJ

The confusion is not on the part of the teachers but the people at the helm. During my three-decade experience in school education and interaction with hundreds of teachers, I have found hardly one per cent of schools that believes in teacher autonomy and negligible number of teachers who can proudly say they have freedom to voice their opinion.

There has to be a support system which is genuinely interested in the professional and academic development of teachers.
