Giant leap

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “An act of a statesman” (December 28). Instead of taking a small leap, the Indian Prime Minister, by making a surprise visit to Pakistan, has taken a bigger jump.

There was a time when India welcomed the tradition of political unanimity at least on foreign affairs. Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao had even entrusted the then Opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee to head an Indian delegation at the important UN Human Rights Commission Conference at Geneva in 1993. Given this, it is unfortunate that the Congress is doubting Mr Modi’s visit to lahore. The lahore trip should be a major step towards restoring normalcy between the two countries.
