Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Growth, the only option” (September 2). leave aside the Government’s claims on demonetisation. The abolition of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 was a well-intentioned move to take the economy to a new height and it was also an attempt to put a dent on the stashing of black money. It is too early to say that demonetisation will permanently affect the economy. The sincerity of the Modi Government is above suspicion, though some steps taken may not yield desired results, as this hasn’t.
It was not the intention of the Government to harass people. In fact, demonetisation of notes has troubled the affluent class the more. A common man in the street has forgotten the inconvenience he suffered for a short period. But political adversaries are happier if a slowing down economy can be an issue to make political capital out of. A sincere mistake can be pardoned by the people. But previous United Progressive Alliance Government caused too many scams and other corrupt activities for the people to forgive those.
