This refers to the editorial, “Battle won, war remains” (August 23). The Supreme Court's historic verdict on triple talaq is laudable. Contrary to expectations, the orthodox Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari lambasted his co-religionist conservatives by stating that had they made a consensus to say ‘no' to this social evil which has been prevalent in India since the Islam's inception, petitioner Shayara Bano would have never approached the court. This reprehensible practice of triple talaq has been abolished in 22 Islamic countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia. Pakistan is far ahead of us as it exterminated it way back in 1956 within a decade of its existence. But in our country it continued, thanks to vote-bank politics. It was Prime Minister Modi's vehement support to the Muslim woman that has led to the abolishment of this evil practice.
However, right to equality, as enshrined in Article 14 of the Constitution, will be fully justified if the Uniform Civil Court is enacted. It will not be incongruous to mention that one thing is clear that unlike the Shah Bano case of 1985, where the Supreme Court's ruling was overturned by the Rajiv Gandhi Government, by enacting a legislation under the pressure of orthodox Muslims, the BJP-led NDA Government will surely enact a legislation in support of it.
