Full statehood

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “No end to confrontations” (July 22). Given the prevalent situation, the status of Delhi Chief Minister seems no better than the Mayor of a municipal corporation.

Mr Arvind Kejriwal is perhaps the only Chief Minister in the country who wields no control over the police force, which is ordained to follow the directives of the Union Government. What can the Chief Minister do in this scenario despite the overwhelming mandate his party received in the elections from the voters of DelhiIJ

The solution lies undoubtedly in conferring full statehood on Delhi. As regards the requirement of the Union Government, it must go in for raising a new police force, which can be called the Capital Police, to ensure the security of the landmarks of Indian democracy, such as Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan and the like. VIP security too can come under the new police structure. Nothing is impossible.
