Fuelling hatred

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Just look who’s talking” (August 15). It is most unfortunate that, instead of learning from past mistakes and engaging in constructive work, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is adding fuel to fire by taking an unethical stand on the incidents of communal violence in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere in the country.

It is wrong to blame the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for increased incidents of communal violence in Uttar Pradesh, by projecting skewed data that more than 600 incidents have occurred in that State ever since Mr Modi came to power.

It seems like the Congress wants to widen the schism between Hindus and Muslims. Ms Gandhi is only creating a fear-psychosis among the Muslims.

Normally, responsible political leaders want to suppress inflammatory data on communal violence but if Ms Gandhi and other Opposition leaders are bringing these figures into the public domain, then it is clear that they aim to gain political mileage out of this matter.

It is no secret that the Hindus have often been given a raw deal in many incidents of communal violence, while Muslims have been accorded preferential treatment, by the Samajwadi Party (which, clearly, only wants to appease minorities and secure its vote bank) in Uttar Pradesh.

But now that the majority community has elected the BJP to the Centre with a huge majority, pseudo-secular parties are worried. The Congress is indulging in cheap publicity gimmicks and wants to interrupt the work of the Government. Both Ms Gandhi and her party stand exposed.
