Fresh Trump, measured and statesmanlike

This refers to the editorial, “Hitting the right notes” (March 3). The editorial has effectively analysed US President Donald Trump’s maiden speech before a joint session of the US Congress. First, his approach was for a united effort by Republicans and Democrats to make the “US great again”. His calm, comforting, peaceful and mature words were praiseworthy for a leader of a great nation, and he called for national unity. Second, he struck a chord with India when, in the beginning of his speech, he condemned the killing of an Indian as a crime of hate and evil. Third, he tried to sooth Indians slightly on immigration by welcoming talent skill and merit.

Meanwhile, in India, opposition parties showing anything but unity for a national cause. They are out to back unpatriotic and anti-national activities in Indian universities and to blame Prime Minister for ‘suffocating free speech'. But the people know better and they will never support the Opposition's opportunistic stand.
