Fresh hopes

Sir — This refers to the article, “Fresh but fractured mandate” (December 24) by Ashok Malik. In Jharkhand, the BJP has emerged victorious with flying colours, winning a majority in the Assembly for the first time since the State’s creation. But voters of Jammu & Kashmir have given a hung House, without having any party winning enough numbers to form a Government on its own. There has also been a polarisation of votes due to the Congress’s unwise policies during the last 60 years.

The pseudo-secularist appeasement policies of the Congress have made the Hindu-dominated Jammu citizens feel like second-class citizens, as compared to the Muslims in Kashmir valley. So much so, that in the Muslim-dominated valley, the BJP could not get a single seat. But with Mr Narendra Modi’s aggressive campaign in the State, the party did very well in the Jammu region. The BJP has been able to restore confidence among the minority Hindu community that it would be treated fairly.
