Freebies: A cheap way to garner political points

Published on:

This refers to the report, “No freebies before polls: SC” (July 6). It is foolish to expect that the Congress-led UPA Government will focus its attention on governance instead of handing out doles.

The Congress, as has been observed over the years, only believes in distributing freebies to voters. Shockingly, voters too have got habituated to these populist measures.

The BJP-led NDA Government had performed  well in all sectors, be it infrastructure or railways, during its rule. The NDA succeeded in bringing fiscal deficit under control. But the Congress is hell-bent upon destroying the economic health of the country by resorting to populist schemes to camouflage its failures. Now, it hopes that its food security Act will make people forget its misgovernance and corruption. The apex court must be congratulated for asking the Election Commission to frame guidelines to regulate content of election manifestos. People also must understand that freebies cannot substitute good governance.
