This refers to the editorial, “Bitter pill for the better” (September 3). The hardship caused to the common man as a result of the strike called by the Central trade unions should propel the Government to address the long-standing demand of the labourers. However, the problem with the public sector units is that they no longer enjoy the irrevocable and unstinted backing of the public. If the common man feels that his purpose is better served by the private sector units, then workers of the PSU and their leaders are themselves to blame.
It is time for trade union leaders to shed their primitive mindsets. They should keep themselves in the loop with modern trends including benefits of private investment towards development. Every move of the Government should not be seen as ‘anti-labour'. The demands of the CTUs cannot be redressed in a day. The minimum wage issue also requires a balanced approach. The need of the hour for the PSUs is to know that efficiency and adapatability cannot be compromised or replaced by strikes.
