Sir — Nobody can find fault with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his rhetoric. While one cannot but admit that his choice of words is captivating, there is a strong contention that there is a turn of phrase he must cease using, before it becomes irritating and off-putting.
Mr Modi is no more a “small man” that he keeps referring himself to. He is right up there at the top of the pole, and his claims to be small and significant can only be compared with the ways of one given to a strong and irresistible propensity for exaggeration. Our Prime Minister does not require the attributes of a pathetic publicity seeker to make his point. His go-getting attitude has endeared him to all.
In modern times, the Prime Minster of a country will be noted as much for his smart looks as for his governing skills. Undoubtedly, well-groomed mannerisms are an asset as far as leaders and heads of States are concerned. Mr Modi has spared no effort to achieve the status of a national icon through a mix of style and substance. He may not have any inhibition about his humble beginnings, but over a period of time, the references to his origins may lead people to believe that such humble backgrounds are essential to rise to the top of the ladder.
