Filtering dirt

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Racist, uncouth netas” (April 3). Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s statement that the Congress chose Ms Sonia Gandhi as its chief because of her white skin deserves to be condemned in the harshest tone. His remark indicates his mental bankruptcy. His racial comment has also irked Nigeria because he said that the Congress would not have made Ms Gandhi the president had she been a Nigerian.

In fact, Mr Singh is a habitual motormouth whose only task is to embarrass his party. The presence in the Union Council of Ministers of those like Mr Giriraj Singh and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has served to tarnish Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ministry. The loudmouths are contributing nothing to the Prime Minister’s agenda of development and good governance, and should be shown the door. Though leaders of other parties are also plagued with this malaise, but people do not expect such words from Union Ministers. It is caste-based politics that compels parties to induct undeserving people as Ministers. Merit, past track record in matters of performance and, most importantly, the mindset of the elected representative, must be taken into account before giving the person a ministerial position.
