Sir — This refers to the report, “Rahul’s wish is Govt command” (October 3). Finally, the shahzada has got the approval to be the supreme leader. His ‘personal opinion’ has been accepted as a command by the ruling Congress and the Government. The media had clearly misread Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s supposed disappointment over Mr Rahul Gandhi’s dramatic denunciation of the ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers, that had been passed by the Union Cabinet. The incident has confirmed that the Mr Gandhi’s diktat is the final word.
Thus, this Gandhi Jayanti marked a historic, though quiet, coronation of the heir apparent. However, given Mr Gandhi’s unpredictable moves and moods, as also his reluctance to take over executive office, he is unlikely to agree to being declared the Congress’s prime ministerial candidate. He may prefer the present arrangement where the party supremo holds all power without accountability, while an underling carries the burdens of public office with accountability.
