Federal police

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Dangerous liaisons” (October 7). The US has an interesting set-up to deal with a Burdwan-like situation: The State police can be federalised in case of an emergency or when a State is not following the Federal law.

In 1963, the segregationist Governor of Alabama refused to allow racial integration at the University of Alabama. He stood at the door of the University to prevent a Black student from entering the premises. In response, President JF Kennedy federalised the Alabama State police, which then had to take orders from the Federal Government.

The Government of India should consider such an option to deal with corrupt State politicians.
