Faulty agenda

Sir — The Modi Government’s hopes of riding out the Sushma Swaraj-lalit Modi storm lies in tatters, with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje also being sucked into the controversy that continues to snowball. News reports suggest that Ms Raje endorsed the former IPl chairman’s paperwork. These papers, provided by Mr Modi’s lawyer, are yet to be verified. But it is no secret that Mr Modi had enviable clout Ms Raje’s previous term as Chief Minister.

Such leaks expose a culture of public servants taking favours from corporates and dubious individuals. A conflict of interest legislation could serve as a deterrent, but its effectiveness is doubtful given the surreptitious manner in which the politician-businessman nexus operates.

Not surprisingly, many exposes are also the result of corporate rivalries. With politicians not living up to their moral obligations, the legislative option must be considered.
