Farming woes

Published on:

Sir — This refers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inspiring Mann ki Baat address to Indian farmers on Sunday. India is the fourth-largest economy in the world, and has transformed itself from a food-deficit nation to a food-surplus country by using technology to step up its agricultural produce.

But the problem looming large is that, many youngsters in the rural areas find working in farms and fields unattractive and non-profitable. So they migrate to the cities in search of greener pastures. An urgent policy intervention coupled with a good strategy is needed, which will make the profession of agriculture attractive for them, and also add dignity and respectability to their work.
