Fake news epidemic

Sir — This refers to the article, “Fake news creates its own ugly reality” (July 14) by Rinku Ghosh. Fake news is increasingly becoming a serious issue, thanks to the misuse of social media. It is also true that Fake news spreads faster than true news on social media.

People with vested interests are able to take advantage of differences between various communities.  Tripura or Dhule lynching incidents are just isolated incidents. There are many such incidents that go unnoticed. We need to act in time before time runs out. Today it is just about Facebook or WhatsApp, tomorrow it can be any other medium. local police and administration can help but only till a point. Ultimately it boils down to us.  Every individual should show restraint and validate the truth of any such news before believing it. Taking the law into our hands is not an option and must be dealt with severely.
