Sir — This refers to the article, “Roots of Parliamentary democracy” (May 22) by VK Bahuguna. Powerful theatricals during the Karnataka election displayed our politicians’ unquenchable greed for power. Though the BJP emerged victorious having secured 104 of the 222 seats, it failed to achieve the magic number — 112. It was, however, clearly that public opinion was in its favour. That the Janata Dal (Secular) could secure only 37 of the 222 seats, made it clear that the electorate never wanted it to assume power. The JD(S) formed an alliance with the Congress against the people’s mandate.
For the Congress, which has been facing frequent setbacks, shocks and reverses for want of leadership, the situation now has become all the more precarious. Democracy in India will be effective and stable if right to vote is made mandatory.
