Sir — Mr Sanjaya Baru’s book has not answered some unanswered mysteries which have baffled many. First, what were the compulsions which led Mr Manmohan Singh to cling on to the post of Prime Minister even when he was completely being bypassedIJ At any given point of time, he could have easily made a dignified exit by citing health reasons. Why did he choose to go through personal humiliation and became the subject of nationwide ridiculeIJ
Mr Singh was also a silent spectator to the downfall of the economy by virtue of the various scams and ill-conceived subsidy schemes. This book seems to be a meek attempt to garner sympathy for an outgoing Prime Minister who will be remembered for putting his loyalty to a family before his duty to the nation.
The nice words that Mr Baru has for Mr Singh is not going to absolve the Prime Minister for causing hurt to the country. He deserves no sympathy. On the contrary, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, being a political leader, in her own way, did a brilliant job of achieving her limited objectives for her party.
