The alleged rape of two Nepalese women by a Saudi diplomat and his guests in Gurgaon is a classic case of ‘sexploitation’ of vulnerable women from the neighbouring country. Nepalese women are brought into India under the guise of ‘domestic maids’. The truth is that women sourced from Nepal are preferred for their complexion and ‘therapeutic value’, in addition to the ‘easy availability’.
The correlation of sex trafficking with poverty is proven. Poverty mitigation, stringent enforcement of regulations for employment of overseas women as domestic helps, and awareness-raising are required, as the remedy for sexploitation. India must do all that is possible to spare itself the dubious honour of being a hub for sexual slavery.
