This refers to the article, “Natural partners come closer” (January 28) by Jason Isaacson. President Barack Obama's successful India visit is a signal of increased importance that Washington, DC, attaches to New Delhi. It shows how vital India is in the US's scheme of things. President Obama is in the middle of his second and last term. His other preoccupations after he first rode to power in 2009 did not help India. However, a toned down Mr Obama now seems to accord India its due. Of course, without a proactive Prime Minister in Mr Narendra Modi, the US President's visit would have been another ritual.

Mr Modi appears determined to thrash out vexed matters. Personal rapport between leaders goes a long way in building bridges between their countries, and the chemistry between Mr Obama and Mr Modi was excellent. Apart from the breakthrough on the civil nuclear agreement issue, the joint strategic vision for Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region is extremely important.
