Sir — This refers to reports that the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have taken swipes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the suit auction issue. When the Congress could not win in any of the recent State Assembly elections and the Trinamool Congress’s graph of popularity is also heading southward in West Bengal, both these beleaguered parties are resorting to the gimmick of chiding Mr Modi over his pinstripe suite. Their remarks of potshot on this issue can be cancelled over two things.
First, the Prime Minister did not buy the suit or get it stitched at the cost of the public exchequer; it was gifted to him. Second, the suit, allegedly costing Rs15 lakh, was put on auction along with 455 other items gifted to the Prime Minister — the realisation of which amount would go into the cleaning of the Ganga. Mr Modi must be praised for taking this step in the national interest.
The Congress and the Trinamool should introspect over their dwindling support and take remedial action to reverse the trend, instead of spending their energy over such preposterous utterances. They must realise that the people are not interested in such shenanigans and looking to more meaningful contribution from them.
