Sir — The news that the more than 160-year-old reliable telegram service came to an end on Sunday, was heart wrenching, and a poignant reminder that the ‘Old order changes, making way for new’. This quick means of communication had played a crucial role in not just the history of telecommunication, but in the lives of all citizens, rich and poor alike, at a time when other faster modes of communication were unheard of.
Good news, bad news or merely routine information that had to be conveyed promptly — the ubiquitous telegram did it with élan. What’s important, it was convenient and affordable. Not surprising, then, that there is some sentimentality attached to it; with many preserving their first telegrams or others rushing to send one (as happened on Sunday) before the telegram truly passed into history.
True, newer technologies have nudged the legendary service out of circulation, but the telegram would continue to occupy a cherished place in our fondest memories.
