Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Booster for Congress” (August 10). Truly speaking, the Election Commission’s (EC) impartial decision vis-à-vis the Gujarat Rajya Sabha poll, in favour of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel, on the ground that the Congress’ rebel legislator duo allegedly displayed their votes to Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in lieu of their own party’s authorised representatives and, thus, failed to keep the secrecy of the ballot, has negated public perception about administrative bodies like the EC, that they work under the duress of ruling powers.
Ultimately, a prolonged public curiosity about the outcome of the political game, which followed a lengthy drama in Gujarat, came to an end with Ahmed Patel being declared the winner. This jolt to the ruling regime has come as a morale-booster for the grand old party.
